Metro Transit, in partnership with the City of Ramsey and Northstar Commuter Rail, commissioned Steen to study and design a snow melt system for the Northstar Corridor Ramsey light rail platform. Nine miles of tubing and nearly 3,000 gallons of glycol solution is encased in identically poured concrete platforms to form the skeleton of this snow melt system. An automatic system will control temperature and flow in the system depending on weather and temperature conditions. The system was designed with an emphasis on energy efficiency, long term service, maintenance and durability. A 4 million btuh high-efficiency gas boiler plant will supply hot water for the snow melt system.
